Each year on December 3, the world celebrates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Disability inclusion is vital to upholding human rights, in your community and around the world. Disability rights are civil rights / human rights!

IDPD is another opportunity for the GCDD Arkansas to say THANK YOU to all the self-advocates (advocates with disabilities), parent & sibling advocates, and professional disability advocates & allies across this nation and the world, for their work. We also want to send our appreciation to the dedicated direct service professionals (DSPs) who give so much in service to their clients. DSPs support people with disabilities in realizing their full potential and independence. 2020 has been a particularly challenging year for the disability community, which is addressed by the 2020 IDPD theme.

2020 Theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD):
“Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”.

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The IDPD is brought to you by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. You can learn more here:https://www.un.org/development/desa/disabilities/about-us.html
