In 2020, we celebrate 100 Years of Developmental Disabilities Resources!

This year is truly special with Vocational Rehabiltation’s 100th anniversary, the State Councils on Developmental Disabilities 50-year anniversary, and with the ADA’s 30th anniversary.

100 Years of Vocational Rehabilitation

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the first federally funded program to assist people with disabilities who had not acquired their disabilities as a result of serving in the military, the Smith-Fess Act of 1920, aka the Industrial Rehabilitation Act and referred to as “The National Civilian Vocational Rehabilitation Act. The Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) will celebrate 100 Years of VR throughout 2020, and this webpage will house updated anniversary content. Check it out!

50 Years of State Councils on Developmental Disabilities –

In 1970, the Developmental Disabilites Services and Facilities Construction Amendments of 1970, or PL 91-517, added allotments to all states and territories to create state plans for the comprehensive services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Each state or territory needed a planning Council to support these activities. Thus, State Councils on Developmental Disabilities began their work. Happy 50th anniversary SCDDs!

The Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities Arkansas was founded as a state planning Council in 1972. In the next two years, we will be exploring our history and developing resources about our journey! So lets also look forward to 2022 and the GCDDAR’s 50th anniversary… We have already begun work on a logo!
